In this experiment you will obtain an UNKNOWN containing KClO3. In a quantitative experiment, you will determine the mass and volume of oxygen generated and the mass of UNKNOWN used.
From this you will be able to.......
  1. Determine the Molar Volume of the Oxygen generated by the catalytic decomposition of the UNKNOWN
  1. Determine the Per Cent of KClO3 in your UKNOWN based on the mass of Oxygen generated and the mass of the Unknown using the equation:

2 KClO3 -------> 2 KCl + 3 O2

Actually this is two experiments.

  1. From the Mass of Oxygen and the Volume of Oxygen you will determine oxygen's Molar Volume at STP.
  1. From the Mass of Oxygen and the Mass of UNKNOWN you will determine the % KClO3 in the UNKNOWN.
