In this experiment:
You will generate and characterize the following gasses:
CO2 SO2 NO NO2 O2 Br2 I2 H2S NH3
Several of these are well known as ........... POLLUTANTS

Major Objectives of this Experiment
  1. Give hands-on experience with well known gaseous chemicals.
    • all the gasses you will generate should be familar to you
    • possible exception, bromine, is similar to the more familar chlorine
  2. Train you in making and recording observations.
    • colors
    • phase changes, formation of bubbles or solids
    • heat
  3. Introduce the logic of making conclusions based on observations.
    • what is the significance of observation "A".
  4. Introduce you to the use of chemical formulae and equations.
    • enjoy the PRELAB

Solubility in water (inversely correlated with effervesence)
Color
Reaction with... LITMUS

You will also carry out some special tests:
Supporting or not supporting combustion
Solubility in the nonpolar (organic) solvent, hexane C6H14
